Description
During construction of the Tecolote Tunnel, miners stand shoulder-deep in water-filled mining cars as they are transported to underground dig sites, California, July 1954. The extreme temperatures underground (frequently over 100 degrees) necessitated that workers be cooled in water to lower the risk of injury caused by heat & humidity. On the way, an inspector writes on a waterproof pad as other watch him.
